Scott Boras, influential veteran agent to Major League Baseball players claims that the MLB system allows teams to purposefully tank in order to improve their future draft standing. He said this has led to the Atlanta Braves winning the 2021 World Series.

‘Competitive cancer’

Boras said that baseball is suffering from a “competitive cancer”, where teams get rid of veteran players so as to acquire draft picks. He said because of this phenomenon, the Braves were able to pick up veteran players for a low price and eventually clinch the World Series pennant.

He said the rules allowed the Braves to be a sub-.500 team on Aug. 1 and then move on to becoming world champions by acquiring players from teams that no longer wanted to compete for the title without spending a lot. He said many teams give up in the middle of a season and practically hand the championship to another team.

Atlanta’s mid-season trades

The Braves made several trades in the middle of the year which helped them land the NL East title and end up with a much-improved record of 88-76. This sent them sailing past the Milwaukee Brewers (who had 95 wins) in the NL division series, the Los Angeles Dodgers (with 106 wins) in the NLCS, and ultimately, the Houston Astros (with 95 wins) in the World Series.
