Bet365 tops £16m GambleAware donations list

PoundNotes

Between 1 April and 31 December 2021, various organisations from across Britain’s gambling sector have voluntarily contributed to the charity’s coffers.

Of these donors, only three gave £1m or more. Bet365 led the pack, having donated more than £4.2m, while Entain trailed closely behind at £4m. William Hill placed third, donating £1m exactly.

Other operators included in GambleAware’s update are Unibet UK, which gave £92,000, Betway, which gave £60,200 and Playtech, which gave £51,768.46.

And this year’s donations include increased contribution levels from leading operators who have pledged to raise the percentage of gross gaming yield (GGY) they donate.

Currently, GambleAware asks all who profit from gambling in Britain to donate 0.1% of their GGY directly to the charity, and those with an annual gross gambling revenue of less than £250,000, to make a minimum donation of £250.

However, several operators have committed to incrementally increasing their contribution percentage to 1% by 2023.

In addition, GambleAware published its list of pledges, which was topped by a more than £4.7m sum from Ladbrokes Coral Group.

“All funds donated to GambleAware go towards activity which is delivered against the charity’s four commissioning objectives, and is supportive of a collaborative, whole-system approach to the prevention of gambling harms,” said the charity.

GambleAware also reiterated its call for a “mandatory levy”, stating: “GambleAware continues to call for a mandatory levy to address gambling harms and ensure transparency and consistency across the industry.

“Having such a system in place would provide the sustainable funding which is vital for the delivery of research, treatment and prevention.”
