Indiana releases gaming report for August 2023, 6% decrease in revenue year-on-year

The Indiana Gaming Commission has published its Summary of Wagering and Supplemental Tax for the month of August 2023.

Taxable Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) was recorded to be $176.7m, a 6% decrease when compared year-on-year.

The total amount of tax gained from gambling in Indiana was $34.9m, comprised of $2.2m from sports wagering, $3.8m from supplemental tax and $28.9m from gaming.

This marks a 10% increase from total gaming tax collected from July 2023 and a 7% decrease when compared year-on-year.

The venue with the highest reported amount of tax was the Horseshoe Indianapolis, located in Shelbyville, with the $6m amount an 8% decrease when compared to July.

However, Horseshoe Indianapolis was almost at the bottom of the leaderboard when it came to sports wagering tax.

The $3.1m handle from Horseshoe Indianapolis accounted for $34,014 in sports wagering tax.

Meanwhile, the $95.7m handle from Ameristar Casino accounted for $728,583 in sports wagering tax, while the $71.1m handle from Blue Chip Casino accounted for $808,785.

As for taxable AGR, Ameristar Casino reported $7.7m and Blue Chip Casino a slightly higher amount of $8.5m.

The total taxable AGR for Indiana was $23.5m from sports wagering, with a total handle of $238m.

This marks a positive growth in handle amounts from Ameristar Casino, which reported handle of $73.3m in August 2022 and $78.7m in July 2023.

In the same period, Blue Chip Casino started out at $69.9m in August 2022 and $63m in July 2023.

It’s worth noting that the sportsbook at Ameristar Casino is operated by DraftKings, while the sportsbook at Blue Chip Casino is partnered with FanDuel.

The most popular sport for the month of August across Indiana was Baseball, at $66.9m, the same sport that led the wagering in both the previous month and year.

In comparison, basketball held $19.8m in wagers and football accounted for $17.3m this month.
